Keratosis Pilaris
what is it?
A skin condition characterised by small bumps on the surface of the skin and dry and rough skin texture.
Bumps are caused by 'keratin plugs' which are a collection of dead skin cells that block the hair follicle (pore) and may cause twisted hairs in the pore. Bumps may or may not be inflamed.
KP occurs mainly on the upper arms (92% of cases), thighs (59% of cases), and buttocks (30% of cases).
KP Affects nearly 50-80% of teens and 40% of adults.
what to do about it
KP usually clears on its own but can also be improved by:
Gentle physical exfoliation (muslin washcloth)
Chemical exfoliation (glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid).
Increasing skin cell turnover (retinoids).
Moisturizing
Avoiding hot showers and baths, drying soaps, and friction from tight clothing.
