Keratosis Pilaris

what is it?

A skin condition characterised by small bumps on the surface of the skin and dry and rough skin texture.

  • Bumps are caused by 'keratin plugs' which are a collection of dead skin cells that block the hair follicle (pore) and may cause twisted hairs in the pore. Bumps may or may not be inflamed.

  • KP occurs mainly on the upper arms (92% of cases), thighs (59% of cases), and buttocks (30% of cases).

  • KP Affects nearly 50-80% of teens and 40% of adults.

    what to do about it

KP usually clears on its own but can also be improved by:

    • Gentle physical exfoliation (muslin washcloth)

    • Chemical exfoliation (glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid).

    • Increasing skin cell turnover (retinoids).

    • Moisturizing

    • Avoiding hot showers and baths, drying soaps, and friction from tight clothing.
